Sculptra is often lumped in with fillers but this is erroneous as it works in an inherently different way. Developed from a product that has been used for years to make absorbable sutures for surgical procedures Sculptra was found to stimulate collagen growth and volume in the surrounding tissues. They therefore developed a technique for infusing granules of this product widely throughout a skin area and thus increasing the volume and tone of the tissues. This counteracts the natural tendency for volume loss in the lower face with age and it can also significantly enhance the facial contours hence it has renamed “Sculptra”.

Sculptra should be considered as a more long term product with a longer duration of effect but a correspondingly longer time to achieve this effect. In fact Sculptra produces a two phase response with the product being injected into the face along with a vehicle of water and lignocaine anaesthetic. This does have an immediate filling effect but it rapidly disperses within the next few weeks leaving no apparent result. This can be quite disconcerting for the patient but at this stage we are left with a fine collection of these small white granules within the skin structure in strategically placed positions.

Because of this more long term nature of the Sculptra treatment it often takes several sessions repeated roughly every 4 to 6 weeks to achieve our desired objective.
