If we all lived in caves we would age a lot more slowly. Yes, of course we would still age but our faces would be spared the ravages of sunlight. Ultraviolet damage causes most of the visible effects of aging, so if nothing else:-
USE SUNSCREEN!
What do we do, however, if we come to this realisation somewhat later in life and we have already spent too long outdoors. Those of us who have spent the summers basking in the South of France or elsewhere will certainly have several give away signs of these excesses.
The skin of the face will tend to be dryer and have a more sallow complexion. The colour and tone of the skin will have lost its evenness and will appear more blotchy and variable. The fine lines around the eyes and the mouth will be more numerous and deeper set. It will tend to avidly ’suck up’ the moisturiser applied at the end of the day. Most obviously it will have lost its own internal glow or ‘Lustre’.
This is the effect you will notice most vividly first thing in the morning when staring bleary eyed at the bathroom mirror.
So is this all doom and gloom? Is it possible that some of this damage can be repaired?
Well, the good news is No, and Yes.
Firstly let me reiterate that prevention is better than cure and so “Use Sunscreen.” should be a mantra of the modern age. This morning I personally applied factor 50 to my face despite the fact that I was likely to be indoors most of the day. Sunscreen is after all one of the few things you can buy over the counter which does actually work……
Secondly I would like to remind you that LASER resurfacing has come on a long way since the early days of CO2 ablative resurfacing. Whilst this was in fact very effective from the outset the discomfort and downtime associated with it meant that it was only really used by the determined and the very stoical.
Several years ago the Original Fraxel device introduced ‘pixelated’ treatments whereby millions of small ‘pits’ were burned into the skin to an appropriate depth, producing the desired results with much less pain and a much faster recovery. Allowing mere mortals to avail themselves of this excellent treatment.
The pixellation does produce a partial treatment so several are needed for the maximum effect, but as the down time is only a few days as opposed to a few months it is much easier to fit this regime into our otherwise very hectic lifestyles.
It is particularly good at pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles. It is most used for the face but it has revolutionised the treatment of neck, décolletage, and hands, areas which have traditionally been very hard to improve.
It certainly can ‘turn back the clock’ on a lot of the visible effects of aging and give you back the confidence you once had in your appearance.
