The sun is now shining, no matter how temporarily, and our thoughts turn to our summer hols. Sunshine, Beaches, Bikinis all wonderful to behold, but for some the nightmare of revealing their legs on the beach is too much and a large thick sarong is the order of the day. But it doesn’t need to be this way…..
Cellulite!
Some doctors say that it doesn’t really exist, others that it is just because you are fat. But millions of ladies know that even size eights have cellulite. In fact the paparazzi have often proved that even some of the mythical size zeros have cellulite. So what exactly is it?
Well firstly it is fat, but perhaps not fat as you know it. What we are talking about is the irregular appearance of the skin usually on the thighs which creates visible dimpling and the ”Peu D’Orange” effect. This is caused by an accumulation of fat in the lower portion of the skin where tight fibrous bands hold down individual points and create the “ripple”. So it is fat. But why do thin people get it?
Well most fat is subcutaneous fat and is, as its name suggests, under the skin ( Sub meaning under – Cutaneous meaning skin). But the skin itself is usually fat free. Under certain circumstances fat can be deposited in the lower reaches of the dermis itself and this layer has a lot of tight fibrous bands in it which gives the skin its strength. The problem is, that as the fat is deposited it causes the skin to swell slightly but it cannot swell as much where the tight bands are, hence the dimpling effect.
Secondly it may be unfair ladies but you are more prone to it than men, so it is probably hormonal in nature. This also explains why it can vary in severity with the menstrual cycle. Men can and do get it but then only usually when they have significant weight problems and this excess fat can produce oestrogen and this may also be significant. The biggest problem is that this cutaneous rather than subcutaneous fat can occur all by itself. This explains why losing weight rarely makes any real difference.
So what if anything can be done?
Do you want the good news or the bad news?
OK first the bad. There are millions of creams and potions on the market that claim to help, and most of them are rubbish. If they help at all it is only temporary and most of them do absolutely nothing apart from perhaps persuade you to do a little light massage and lymphatic drainage as you apply the cream. By the way this massage does help and is the basis for most of the treatments which do work.
Now the good. Endermology probably does work but it is very time consuming and does require frequent repeat treatments. Velasmooth combines the vacuum massage of Endermology with radio frequency and infra-red heating to increase its effect. This does make it a lot more effective and it does require less frequent repetitions but it does cost a little more. Having said that we now do a lot of velasmooth specifically for cellulite.
Now the great news! It has been a long time coming and we have been waiting with bated breath, but Thermage have finally released the Cellulite Tip. Yes the Thermage machine which was originally marketed for skin tightening on the face. It has taken them three years to perfect the technique and develop a new head that was specifically aimed at cellulite. In fact during their research they developed another tip which was found to produce good body contouring effects almost by accident.
And here finally is the best bit. Unlike all previous treatments, most people only need a single Thermage treatment to get a good long lasting result. Yes that’s right just one.
Does that sound good or what?
